WHAT IS HEAD START/EARLY HEAD START?

 

Head Start is a federally funded program that provides ongoing comprehensive child development services and family services.

 

PURPOSE OF HEAD START/EARLY HEAD START

 

 

The purpose of Head Start/Early Head Start is to:

*Enhance children’s cognitive, social, emotional and physical development.

*Assist parents in fulfilling their parental roles.

*Prepare children for future growth and development.

 

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Head Start serves residents throughout the county who have children who will be three or four years old by September 1.

Early Head Start serves pregnant women and children 6 weeks old through 3 years old

 

 

TRANSPORTATION

 

We provide limited transportation. Please call your local Head Start/Early Head Start Center for more information.

 

APPLICATION PROCESS

 

To complete an application for your child, you must provide the following.

*Form 3231-immunization certificate

*A copy of the birth certificate

*A copy of your current tax return OR proof of family income for the past 12 months. 

*Social Security numbers for all family members.

*Documentation of TANF, SSI or relative care subsidy, if applicable

*Medicaid, Peach Care or insurance number, if any.

 

PROGRAMS

 

Full Day is available at some locations for parents who are working, full time students or in a TANF sponsored job search. There must be no caregiver available in the home. Full Day provides the same educational opportunities as Standard Head Start, but also provides longer hours of care for those who need them.

Developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive services that actively engage children to enhance & advance each child’s development.

 

FAMILY DEVELOPMENT

 

Parent meetings and trainings are offered monthly and parent involvement is strongly urged. Parents receive ongoing support from staff.

 

 

 

NUTRITION

 

Breakfast and lunch are served daily, as well as a snack for Full day/ Full Year. Meals are prepared according to USDA standards and staff monitors children’s growth.

 

DISABILITY SERVICES

 

Children with special needs are mainstreamed into the classrooms, including collaboration with other agencies, to provide comprehensive services. If delays are suspected, children are referred to the appropriate agencies.
